The Final Whistle

Author

Nigel Owens

Nigel made history by becoming the first referee to reach the 100-Tests landmark, took charge of the 2015 World Cup final at Twickenham, officiated a record number of Six Nations games and European club finals, and was in the middle as some of the most epic matches in the sport unfolded. Off the field, Nigel is an inspiration and an icon - in 2007 after coming out as gay, Owens was named 'Gay Sports Personality of the Year' at gay rights' group Stonewall's awards ceremony and later on in 2015 was named 'Gay Sports Personality of the Decade'. Nigel continues to be a huge advocate for LGBTQ rights in sports and, since his retirement, now owns a farm in Swansea with his partner.
