We're looking for an (Assistant) Commissioning Editor to join our small but mighty team. This permanent full time role is an exciting opportunity for an exceptionally organised and commercially astute editor to gain hands-on experience in acquisitions and author management, while supporting the Head of Publishing and developing deep expertise across every stage of the non-fiction and fiction publishing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing acquired titles through all stages of the editorial and publishing process
  • Editing manuscripts and preparing editorial notes and feedback
  • Writing and refining jacket copy, online copy, metadata and sales materials
  • Coordinating editorial schedules and ensuring projects remain on track
  • Briefing and managing freelance copy editors, proofreaders and other suppliers
  • Liaising with Production, Design, Marketing, Publicity and Sales teams throughout publication
  • Acting as a key point of contact for authors and agents, ensuring an excellent author experience
  • Maintaining accurate title information and metadata across internal systems
  • Championing books internally and contributing to positioning, packaging and publishing discussions
  • Reading proposals and manuscripts and contributing editorial insight to team discussions
  • Supporting the Head of Publishing in the smooth running of the adult list

The successful candidate will be:

  • An excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing
  • A multitasker with keen attention to detail
  • Confident working across Microsoft and social media platforms
  • Committed to the importance of diversity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Able to build positive working relationships with internal and external contacts
  • Familiarity with Bookscan and metadata management systems a plus
  • Design awareness and an interest in cover and package development a plus
