George MacDonald was born on December 10, 1824. Leaving his Highland roots for an education at King s College, Aberdeen, MacDonald brought his fervent love of nature and the Christian virtues into the intellectual worlds of literature and theology. MacDonald wrote over fifty volumes of fairy tales, fantasies, sermons, novels, and poetry. Diary of an Old Soul is his best-known volume of poetry, written in the late 1870s.
